Why do people use electronics to escape or detach from the world around them? When we connect digitally, extending our reach towards people elsewhere, we’re retracting our reach towards the people in our material lives. What we’re seeking is familiarity, family, and human connection. What we may be getting is ephemerality, detachment, and distance. My current body of work is my attempt to answer these questions by illustrating this distance through copper etchings and digital photo transfers on kitakata and the process of chine colle. This process replicates the experience of detachment in my reality. Taking a personal approach to this dilemma, I reference my own family photos for altering to question if these are instances of 'family time', how important it is to be fully present in those moments, and what we are detaching ourselves from when we go into our devices.
